New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has entered the 20th day of his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, with doctors warning that prolonged fasting could soon begin affecting vital organs. Despite growing concerns over his health, Wangchuk has reiterated that he will continue the fast until the government responds to the protesters' demands.

Calling youth the strongest voice of democracy, he appealed to students and young citizens to come forward peacefully, support the movement and ensure that their concerns reach the government and Parliament.

Critical health condition

According to the latest medical assessment, Wangchuk has lost more than nine kilograms since beginning his fast on June 28 and now weighs 56.9 kg. Doctors said his body has exhausted glucose reserves and is increasingly relying on muscle tissue for energy, raising concerns about possible organ damage if the fast continues.

Medical teams are monitoring him round the clock, describing the coming phase as the most critical.

Delhi High Court orders daily monitoring

Hearing a petition over Wangchuk's health, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct daily medical examinations and provide immediate treatment if his condition deteriorates. The court observed that every citizen's life is precious and appropriate medical care must be ensured.
