New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed all High Courts to submit all the information on pending acid attack cases across the country within four weeks. A bench comprising Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued the order on a public interest petition (PIL) filed by acid attack victim Shaheen Malik. The Court also described the delay in Malik's case as a "national shame." The case has been pending in the Rohini court since 2009.
"Law and order has been made a mockery. This is very shameful. If this is the situation in the national capital, what else would it be like? This is a national shame." The bench said.
The CJI asked Malik to explain in her petition why her case has not been resolved yet, and assured the court that it could take cognizance of it itself if it deemed it necessary.
The Apex Court has directed the registries of all High Courts to submit a complete report on pending cases within four weeks.
During the hearing, Malik stated that many victims are forced to drink acid, leaving them on feeding tubes for life and suffering severe disabilities.
