Halwa ceremony kicks off final phase of Union Budget 2026–27
New Delhi: The final stage of preparations for the Union Budget 2026-27 formally commenced on Monday with the traditional Halwa Ceremony held at the Budget Press in North Block.
The ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, marking the beginning of the crucial “lock-in” period for officials involved in the Budget-making process.
Lock-in Period Begins Ahead of Budget Presentation
The Halwa Ceremony is a long-standing tradition that signifies the completion of the Budget’s preparation and precedes the physical isolation of officials until the Budget is presented in Parliament. The Union Budget 2026-27 will be presented on February 1, 2026.
Senior officials, including Secretaries of various departments under the Ministry of Finance and key officers associated with Budget preparation, were present during the event.
FM Reviews Budget Press Preparations
Following the ceremony, the Finance Minister visited the Budget Press to review readiness and extended her best wishes to the entire Budget team for the successful presentation of the Budget.
Budget Documents to Be Available Digitally
All Union Budget documents-including the Annual Financial Statement (Budget), Demand for Grants and Finance Bill-will be available digitally through the Union Budget Mobile App. The bilingual app (English and Hindi) will be accessible on both Android and iOS platforms and can also be downloaded from the Union Budget web portal.
The documents will be made available on the app and website after the completion of the Finance Minister’s Budget speech in Parliament on February 1, 2026, ensuring easy access for Members of Parliament and the general public.
