Lucknow: A political controversy erupted on Saturday over the death of a girl from the Vishwakarma community in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district, with opposition leaders demanding a high-level probe and justice for the victim’s family.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, called for an impartial and high-level investigation into the case. Referring to earlier incidents such as Hathras, Kathua, Unnao, and violence in Manipur, he alleged a recurring pattern in which victims from marginalised communities face brutality while accused persons are protected and victims’ families are harassed. He also urged action against responsible police officials and demanded security for the victim’s family, along with immediate justice.

Akhilesh Yadav also demanded justice

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav also demanded justice, alleging that under the BJP government a “new trend” has emerged in which pressure is allegedly exerted on victims to alter their statements after incidents of violence. He criticised the state’s law and order situation and said governance in Uttar Pradesh was in a poor state.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also alleged that atrocities against women in Uttar Pradesh have reached their peak under BJP rule.

Responding to the opposition’s remarks, BJP Minority Morcha president Basit Ali said appropriate action has already been taken in accordance with law. He accused opposition parties of trying to create divisions along caste and religious lines and of attempting to tarnish the image of the state government.
