Leh: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday spoke about Operation Sindoor, conducted in May following the Pahalgam terror attack, emphasizing that Indian forces “could have done much more” but opted for a measured and restrained response. He highlighted that the operation demonstrated both the operational capability and discipline of the armed forces in neutralizing terror threats without escalating the situation.

“During Operation Sindoor, the coordination among our armed forces, civil administration, and citizens of the border areas was incredible. I am grateful to every citizen of Ladakh and other border regions for supporting our forces,” Singh said while inaugurating 125 infrastructure projects completed by the Border Roads Organisation.

Operation Sindoor: A Strategic and Measured Response

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as a response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. Singh underscored that the armed forces displayed both courage and restraint, taking only necessary action against the terrorists.

“Our forces executed the operation with valour and discipline. Of course, they could have done much more if needed, but restraint was key to ensuring a measured response,” he said.

Connectivity as the Backbone of Security

The Defence Minister emphasized that the success of Operation Sindoor was made possible by strong connectivity in border regions. Roads, real-time communication systems, satellite support, surveillance networks, and timely logistics ensured the armed forces could operate efficiently in challenging terrains.

“Every second of a soldier deployed along the border is vital. Connectivity is not just about networks, optical fibre, drones, or radars. It is the backbone of national security,” Singh stated. He also noted that his ability to visit and interact with forces across the country relies heavily on these communication networks.

Broader Implications for Border Development and Growth

Singh linked improved infrastructure and connectivity in border regions to both security and economic development. Enhanced networks have allowed troops to operate effectively while also supporting holistic growth initiatives in these areas. Citing India’s 8.2 per cent GDP expansion in the second quarter of 2025-26, Singh attributed part of this growth to improved connectivity and government reforms.

“Our government, armed forces, and organisations such as the BRO are committed to the development of border regions. Strengthening this bond ensures that external challenges do not affect national security or community welfare,” Singh said.

He concluded by reiterating that communication and connectivity are essential not only for security but also for societal understanding, harmony, and economic progress, making these networks a cornerstone of both defence and national development.
