New Delhi: Weather conditions turned unstable across north India on Monday as clouds and rain covered large parts of the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall for several states, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, on October 6.

As per IMDs a new western disturbance, along with moisture from the Arabian Sea is responsible for the sudden change. Delhi-NCR, western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to see rain, lightning and gusty winds, with the wet spell expected to continue for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Delhi-NCR: Cloudy Sky, Intermittent Rain

The national capital woke up to a cloudy morning with mild humidity and a pleasant nip in the air. According to IMD data, Delhi’s maximum temperature is likely to hover around 28 to 29 °C, while the minimum may settle near 23 °C. Intermittent showers and thunderstorms are forecast through the day as the western disturbance strengthens.

A Yellow Watch for lightning remains in force over parts of West Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad till Tuesday morning. Authorities have cautioned of waterlogging, traffic congestion and flight delays during evening showers. Despite the disruptions, the rain is expected to bring temporary relief from poor air quality that had worsened over the weekend.

Uttar Pradesh: Hail and Thunderstorms in Western Belt

The weather in Uttar Pradesh is showing a clear east-west divide. Eastern parts including Varanasi and Prayagraj are likely to remain mostly sunny and humid, while western districts such as Saharanpur, Bijnor, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Badaun are under an IMD alert for thunderstorms and hailstorms.

Temperatures in western UP are expected to stay below 30 °C because of rain, whereas central and eastern areas could touch 34 to 35 °C. Gusty winds and short, intense downpours may impact standing crops, prompting local administrations to advise farmers to take precautionary steps.

Uttarakhand: Heavy Rain expected

Mountainous Uttarakhand continues to experience unsettled weather. The hill state may receive moderate to heavy rainfall in most districts, while higher reaches of Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh could witness fresh snowfall above 4,000 metres.

Temperatures in the plains may range between 18 and 25 °C, dropping to single digits in high-altitude zones. The State Disaster Management Authority has advised tourists and locals to avoid unnecessary travel on hill routes amid risks of landslides and road blockages.
