New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR as the southwest monsoon officially arrived in the national capital, bringing relief from prolonged heat and humidity.

The weather department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph through Friday, with more showers likely over the weekend.

Monsoon Brings Relief to Delhi

Rain lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday, significantly lowering temperatures and easing the humid conditions. The IMD confirmed that favourable atmospheric conditions have led to the onset of the southwest monsoon over Delhi.

For July 3 and July 4, the weather office has predicted generally cloudy skies accompanied by moderate to heavy rain.

Yellow Alert Issued

The IMD warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph at isolated places. While the rainfall is expected to provide much-needed relief, authorities cautioned that intense showers could lead to waterlogging, traffic congestion and reduced visibility in low-lying areas.

Residents have been advised to monitor weather updates and plan travel accordingly, particularly during peak commuting hours.

North India to Witness Widespread Rainfall

The wet spell in Delhi is part of intensified monsoon activity across northern India. States including Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttar Pradesh are also expected to receive widespread rainfall over the next few days.

The IMD has also warned of stronger thunderstorms and squally winds of 50-60 kmph in isolated parts of Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan.

Monsoon Advances Further Across India

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has advanced into more parts of Madhya Pradesh and covered the remaining areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. It has also spread across parts of Uttar Pradesh, most of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh.

Meteorologists said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance into the remaining parts of northwestern India in the coming days.
