“Who Is a True Indian? SC Can’t Decide,” Says Priyanka Gandhi in Rahul’s Defence

Backing her brother, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi said that the Supreme Court cannot decide who is a true Indian. It is the duty of the opposition to ask questions of the government. Rahul Gandhi has neither made any vilifying comments about the Army nor has he been misrepresented. However, the Supreme Court had objected to Rahul Gandhi’s claims and asked him how he knew that China had occupied 2000 square kilometers of Indian land.

New Delhi: Priyanka Gandhi has responded to the Supreme Court's comment and clarified that no court can decide who is a "true Indian." She said that it is the duty of the opposition leader to question the government, and Rahul Gandhi has never made any derogatory statement against the army. She says that Rahul Gandhi's message has been misrepresented.

What was the Supreme Court's comment?

The Supreme Court had objected to a statement made by Rahul Gandhi during the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra,' in which he said that China has occupied 2000 square kilometers of India's land. The court said that if he is a true Indian, he will not say such things. However, the court stayed the proceedings going on in a Lucknow court.

A bench of Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice Augustine George Masih had asked Rahul Gandhi how he got the information that China has occupied Indian land. The court said that if he does not have any concrete evidence, then why is he making such a statement?

Priyanka Gandhi's response

Priyanka Gandhi said that the court's statement that it is beyond their jurisdiction to decide "who is a true Indian." She stressed that it is the right and duty of the opposition to question the government. She said in defense of Rahul Gandhi that he always respects the army, and any statement against him has been misrepresented.

Abhishek Singhvi's argument

Rahul Gandhi's lawyer, Abhishek Singhvi, said that if opposition leaders cannot question the government, it would be unfortunate for democracy. He said that if Rahul Gandhi cannot raise questions based on the news published in the media, then what will be the work of the opposition? Singhvi also said that a true Indian can also say that our 20 soldiers died, and this is a matter of concern.

The court responded by saying that it is not unusual for both sides to suffer casualties when there is a border conflict. Singhvi responded that Rahul Gandhi's intention was only to demand transparency and accountability from the government and not to criticize the army.
