New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has informed the Supreme Court of India that the final supplementary list of voters under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal will be released tonight.

This list will determine the status of nearly 8 lakh voters whose applications are still under review.

Around 8 Lakh Names Still Under Scrutiny

According to officials, over 60 lakh names had initially come under scrutiny after the publication of draft electoral rolls. While approximately 52 lakh cases have already been resolved, adjudication for the remaining applicants is nearing completion.

The process is being carried out under the supervision of judicial officers, following directions from the Supreme Court to ensure transparency and fairness.

Tribunal Route for Excluded Voters

Voters whose names do not appear in the final supplementary list will have to approach designated tribunals to seek inclusion. However, uncertainty remains over when these tribunals will become operational, raising concerns for those affected.

With the election timeline tightening, delays in grievance redressal could leave some voters without recourse before polling.

Elections Around the Corner

The revision exercise is crucial as West Bengal prepares for assembly elections, with the first phase scheduled for April 23. The deadline for filing nominations for this phase falls on April 6, making the timely completion of voter verification essential.

Electoral rolls must be finalised and frozen ahead of polling to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.

Security Concerns After Malda Incident

The process has also highlighted security challenges. Concerns intensified after a recent incident in Kaliachak, Malda, where judicial officers involved in voter verification were reportedly surrounded by a crowd.

Authorities have since indicated that additional measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of officials engaged in the exercise.

Counting Scheduled for May 4

Once polling concludes across phases, counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. The completion of the SIR process is expected to play a key role in determining voter participation and the overall integrity of the electoral process in the state.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes remain on the final list, which will decide the electoral fate of lakhs of voters.
