A political storm erupted after TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked during a visit to violence-hit Sonarpur. Mamata Banerjee and several opposition leaders accused the BJP of promoting hate and violence.

Kolkata: A major political controversy erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district on Saturday. Several opposition leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, strongly condemned the incident and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of promoting violence.

Reacting to videos of the attack shared online, Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the BJP. “Rulers became killers — shame on you BJP,” she wrote on social media while reposting footage of the incident.

Stones, Eggs and Shoes Hurled During Visit

Abhishek Banerjee was visiting Sonarpur to meet families allegedly affected by post-poll violence when unidentified individuals reportedly hurled stones, eggs and shoes at him. Videos from the scene showed security personnel escorting the TMC leader away amid chaos.

Banerjee later claimed the attack was an attempt to kill him and said he would approach the court regarding the incident.

Opposition Leaders Rally Behind TMC MP

Several leaders from opposition parties criticised the incident and questioned the law-and-order situation in the state.

TMC leader Sushmita Dev described the assault as a “pre-mediated and planned” attack aimed at silencing the party. Another TMC MP, Sagarika Ghose, alleged that police personnel were absent during the violence.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned the attack and urged both the Centre and the West Bengal government to ensure the safety of opposition leaders.

“Political differences can never justify violence,” Kharge stated, while accusing the BJP of politics driven by vendetta and persecution. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called the incident a “murderous attack” and criticised what he termed “hate-filled politics.”

BJP Distances Itself From Incident

Meanwhile, BJP’s West Bengal unit chief Samik Bhattacharya distanced the party from the attack, saying such incidents have no place in a democracy. However, he also accused the TMC of past violence against BJP workers and supporters in the state, claiming the saffron party had faced similar attacks earlier.

The incident has further escalated political tensions in West Bengal, where allegations of post-poll violence continue to dominate the political narrative following the recent Assembly elections.
