New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday announced VD Satheesan as Keralam’s new Chief Minister, putting an end to the suspense after the UDF’s sweeping victory in the Assembly elections.

The new Keralam CM will become the 13th Keralam Chief Minister since the state’s formation in 1956.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a major victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 140 seats. Congress became the single largest party with 63 seats. Left Democratic Front (LDF), which had 99 seats in 2021, dropped to 35 seats. The result marked a historic comeback for the alliance after a decade out of power.
Who is VD Satheesan?
VD Satheesan is a senior Congress leader from Kerala. He has been representing the Paravur constituency since 2001 and won the seat for the sixth consecutive time in 2026, defeating CPI candidate ET Taison Master by 20,600 votes with a total of 78,658 votes.
Satheesan served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2021 until the UDF’s big win in 2026. He played a key role in the UDF campaign against the ruling Left government and has been a vocal critic on political and governance issues.
Born in 1964 in Nettoor near Kochi, Satheesan is a trained lawyer and social worker. He started his political career with the Kerala Students Union (KSU), then became active in the Youth Congress. Known for his sharp speaking and organizational skills, he represents a younger, reform-oriented generation of Congress leaders.
His major political breakthrough came in 2021, when he was chosen as Leader of the Opposition despite never having been a minister. This decision was considered risky at the time but highlighted his rising influence in the party.
