Mumbai: As the 'Gunotsav' festivities continue for the third day today, the air across the Nation is filled with religious fervour and devotion. Lakhs and lakhs of devotees are flocking to about 20 lakh Ganesh Pandals across the country to offer their prayers, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Ganesh Chaturthi Day 2: Srikanteshwara Temple in Mysore with 32 incarnations of Lord Vinayak
The wealthiest and the richest Ganpati is the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) Seva Mandal Ganpati Pandal with lavish decorations at King's Circle here in Mumbai. Here Lord Vinayak is adorned with 69 kg gold and 223 kg silver.
The GSB Seva Mandal started this biggest Ganesh installation in Dadar in 1952. This Pandal is surrounded by residential houses too. This Mandal gets their insurance done and that of every every devotee who comes here for Rs 475 crore.
Donation boxes are kept at various places in the pandal. People offer money, gold and silver in them. The GSB Mandal President said that these boxes have been placed in each row for the convenience of the donors so that they have not to cross from one row to another. At present the Mandal GSB Ganpati has about 4000 members. The President is elected from among them in turn for the term of two years.

Most of the historians believe that this tradition of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi for 10 days has been going on since the Peshwa period (17th Century). Later Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak made this festival a mass movement and unity. Tilak took it out of private worship and gave it the form of a public festival where people could gather in large numbers for greater social unity increases. Since then Ganesh Utsav started being celebrated for 10 days on a large scale.
According to Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshipped for ten days in a ritualistic manner. The day on which he is immersed at the end of the puja is considered the most auspicious day as the blessings of Ganesha are received on this day. Therefore, devotees bid farewell to Ganesha with great pomp on this day. This year, according to the Panchang, Ganpati Visarjan will take place on September 6.
