Big Political Shift in TN: DMDK Aligns with DMK Before Elections

With the Assembly elections fast approaching in Tamil Nadu, the DMDK on Thursday entered into an electoral alliance with the ruling DMK government and ended the prolonged speculation. The DMDK of late actor-politician Vijayakanth formalised the alliance today and further strengthened the DMK-led alliance. This will counter actor Vijay’s new party, TVK, formed in 2024.

Chennai: Ending the prolonged speculation, the DMDK of late actor-politician Vijayakanth on Thursday formalised its alliance with the ruling DMK-led Front ahead of the ensuing Tamil Nadu Assembly polls in April. This is the first time since its formation that the DMDK has entered into an alliance with the DMK, making the alliance formidable.

Key Leaders Meet at Anna Arivalayam

DMDK General Secretary and Vijayakanth's wife, Premalatha, accompanied by her brother Sudeesh and her son Vijay Prabakaran, met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters, “Anna Arivalayam,” and formalised the alliance.

Welcoming the DMDK into the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), Mr. Stalin expressed happiness over the alliance and recalled Vijayakanth's respect and affection towards late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi. Stalin said DMDK's entry would contribute to Tamil Nadu's progress and reinforce the Dravidian model of governance.

Seat Sharing and Political Impact

Later, speaking to the media, Premalatha said, “The alliance that everyone had been expecting has now taken shape. This partnership reflects the wishes of our district secretaries, party functionaries, and party cadres.”

On the number of seats the DMDK would contest, she said the party would form a seat-sharing panel to hold talks. After the discussions, the DMK, heading the Front, would announce the numbers.

There is speculation that the DMDK would contest at least 7–8 Assembly seats and would get one Rajya Sabha seat, for which elections are scheduled on March 16.

The alliance could be a major blow to the AIADMK-BJP combine, which had also been trying to woo the DMDK into the NDA.
