Chennai: A day after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) faced a crushing setback in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning only 59 out of 234 seats, Chief Minister MK Stalin submitted his resignation to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Tuesday. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested Stalin to continue in office until a new government is formed, according to a press release from Tamil Nadu’s Raj Bhavan.

In the election results, actor Vijay’s party, the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats. Although TVK fell short of the majority mark of 118, it is likely to form the government with support from the Congress and other allies.

The ruling DMK finished second with 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) secured 47 seats. Congress won five seats, and the PMK captured four.

In a significant upset, MK Stalin lost his own constituency to TVK’s V.S. Babu by a margin of 8,795 votes.
