Bengaluru: The Bengaluru police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a “comprehensive and meticulous” probe into the death of real estate tycoon CJ Roy, founder of the Confident Group, who was found dead at his office during ongoing Income Tax Department searches.

Roy, 57, allegedly died by suicide on Friday after sustaining a gunshot wound from his licensed firearm, officials said. The incident has raised questions due to its timing amid tax proceedings against his company.

Incident Occurred During Income Tax Searches

According to police, Income Tax officials were present at the Confident Group’s Langford Road office on Friday when the incident occurred. T.A. Joseph, managing director of the group, told investigators that Roy had come to the office to provide a statement to tax authorities.

Joseph stated that Roy entered his cabin, locked the door, and told staff that he needed to speak to his mother. When he did not respond for some time, employees forced the door open and found him unresponsive with a gunshot wound. An ambulance was immediately called, but medical personnel declared him dead on arrival at the hospital.

Senior Officers to Lead Investigation

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh announced that the SIT will be led by Joint Commissioner of Police (West Zone) C. Vamshi Krishna. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Division) Lokesh Jagalasar has been appointed as the investigating officer.

The SIT has been empowered to induct additional officers and resources if required. All concerned departments have been directed to extend full cooperation to ensure a lawful and time-bound investigation.

Family Alleges Pressure From Tax Proceedings

Roy’s brother, Babu Roy, has linked the death to pressure stemming from Income Tax proceedings. He told reporters that searches were conducted at the company’s premises in December 2025 and again in January.

“My brother often said the pressure from the Income Tax department was overwhelming. He had no debts or financial troubles. I spoke to him on the morning of January 30,” Babu Roy said, adding that the family was devastated by the loss.

Government Orders Detailed Inquiry

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara confirmed that a preliminary inquiry had begun and said further action would depend on the findings. He clarified that the harassment angle related to tax searches had not yet been examined.

The Ashok Nagar police station has registered an Unnatural Death Report, and the case is currently being treated as a prima facie suicide, pending the SIT’s findings.
