Lucknow: Two shocking incidents of atrocities against Dalits in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have triggered widespread outrage. Opposition parties have slammed the BJP-led governments in both states for failing to protect the dignity of marginalized communities.
The cases, involving humiliation and physical abuse, have raised concerns about caste-based violence and the safety of vulnerable communities.
In Lucknow, 60-year-old Rampal Rawat, a Dalit man, was allegedly forced to lick the ground near the Sheetla Maataa temple in Kakori on Diwali evening. The accused, Swami Kant alias “Pammu”, reportedly confronted Rawat, accusing him of urinating near the temple.

Police said Rawat was drinking water at the temple when the confrontation occurred. Despite Rawat explaining that the wet spot was from spilled water, the accused allegedly hurled casteist abuses and forced him to lick the ground.
Rawat’s grandson, Mukesh Kumar, told media, “My grandfather has breathing issues and may have accidentally urinated while coughing. He got scared and obeyed when Pammu forced him. Later, he had to wash the spot.”
Pammu has been arrested and booked under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police are investigating whether Rawat was forced to lick the ground or only touch it, as accounts differ.
The incident drew sharp condemnation. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called it “inhumane and humiliating,” adding, “No one should be punished in such a degrading way.”

The Congress party described the act as a “blot on humanity” and alleged that the accused was an RSS worker, accusing the BJP and RSS of anti-Dalit attitudes. Police, however, denied any links to any organization.
In Bhind district, Madhya Pradesh, a 25-year-old Dalit man was allegedly abducted, beaten, and forced to drink urine by his former employer, Sonu Barua, along with Alok Sharma and Chhotu Ojha.
Police said the victim was kidnapped from his in-laws’ home in Gwalior, taken to Bhind in an SUV, and brutally assaulted after quitting as Barua’s driver.
“They beat me with a plastic pipe and forced me to drink urine from a bottle,” the victim told reporters. He added that he was later tied with an iron chain and humiliated again. The accused have been arrested under the SC/ST Act and several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and investigations are ongoing.

Both incidents have reignited debates about the protection of Dalits and the enforcement of caste-based laws. Civil society, political leaders, and social media users have demanded swift justice and stronger measures to prevent such humiliations in the future.
The incidents in Lucknow and Bhind highlight the continued vulnerability of Dalits in India. With arrests made and investigations underway, political leaders and citizens are calling for accountability, justice, and stricter protection to ensure that caste-based humiliation and violence are not repeated
