New Delhi: A case in China is currently making headlines, where a man sued the shopkeeper and the lottery management center after spending approximately ₹11.8 million on lottery tickets. Although the court dismissed his petition, the case quickly went viral on social media.

Tickets worth millions purchased in one month

According to reports, this man, living in Hefei, purchased a large number of lottery tickets continuously during September 2023. He spent a total of 900,000 yuan (approximately ₹11.8 crore) on tickets, but received no prize.

It was reported that he selected tickets through a social media app and transferred the money directly to the seller's bank account. The seller would then send a photo of the tickets after purchasing them.

Case against shopkeeper and lottery center

When the man did not win any of the tickets, he filed a lawsuit against the seller and the lottery management center. He argued that the method of selling and promoting the tickets was beyond the legal scope, and therefore the purchase contract should be declared invalid. He demanded the court return his 900,000 yuan, plus interest. The case was reported by several media outlets.

Why did the court reject the petition?

The case was heard in the Baohe District People's Court. The court stated that the available evidence did not prove that the man was coerced or misled into purchasing the lottery.

The court also acknowledged that the seller had repeatedly warned him about the risks and he himself had confirmed understanding the potential losses. Despite this, he spent a large sum of money, so demanding a refund was not justified.

Case became a topic of discussion on social media

Following the court's decision, the incident became a topic of discussion on social media. Many people are calling it an example of lottery addiction, while others are considering it a matter of personal responsibility.

This incident once again demonstrates how risky it can be to invest large sums of money relying on luck. Experts believe that people should seriously understand the financial risks and potential losses when participating in games like lotteries.
