New Delhi: Dense fog is a common problem during the winter season. Due to fog, roads, vehicles ahead, and turns are not visible in time. Sometimes, visibility is reduced to just a few meters, which is called 'zero visibility'. In such situations, high speed or wrong decisions can lead to serious accidents.

Keep your windshield clean

In foggy conditions, mist accumulates on car windows, making it difficult to see outside. To avoid this, turn on the AC for a few minutes. Running the AC quickly clears the moisture from the windshield, and the glass becomes clear. Also, keep the wipers and washers in good working order so that they can be used immediately when needed.

Use reflector tape

For safe driving, it is very important to put reflector tape on the back of your car. This tape glows in the dark and fog, allowing vehicles coming from behind to know in advance that there is a car ahead. This significantly reduces the chances of a collision.

Defogger provides better visibility

Nowadays, most cars come with a defogger. It can be identified by the thin lines on the rear window. Turning on the defogger while driving clears the rear glass in just a few minutes, providing a clear view of the traffic behind.

Use parking lights correctly

In foggy conditions, use parking or low beam lights instead of high beam lights. This allows vehicles in front and behind to see you easily. Turning on the parking lights also illuminates the indicators at the front and rear of the car, signaling your presence.

Avoid these mistakes, or you could pay a heavy price:

  • Driving at high speed
  • Following the vehicle in front too closely
  • Stopping suddenly in the middle or on the side of the road
  • Attempting to overtake
  • Changing lanes suddenly without using indicators
