New Delhi: The year 2025 has proven to be historic for the Indian automobile industry in many ways. While domestic sales of cars and SUVs set new records, Indian motorcycles established a strong presence in the global market, setting new export records. According to the latest data, motorcycle exports in 2025 increased by a remarkable 27 percent to reach 4.3 million units, an all-time high.

Strong Recovery After COVID

In the pre-pandemic period (2017-2019), motorcycle exports from India were steadily increasing. While exports stood at 2.3 million units in 2017, they increased to 3.1 million units by 2019. However, in 2020, COVID-19 severely impacted global supply chains and trade, leading to a decline in exports. However, the Indian two-wheeler industry has since rebounded rapidly. Exports surpassed pre-pandemic levels in 2021 itself, and despite some fluctuations, they reached a record 4.3 million units in 2025.

Growing Demand for Indian Motorcycles in Foreign Markets

Their affordable pricing, superior mileage, robust engines, and low maintenance costs are considered key factors behind the success of Indian motorcycles. Latin America emerged as India's largest export market in 2025, with Colombia and Brazil seeing strong demand for Indian motorcycles. The popularity of Indian motorcycles also increased in African countries, with Nigeria being a major market. Asian countries like Nepal and the Philippines also contributed significantly to export growth.

Bajaj Auto and TVS Dominance

Indian companies' dominance in motorcycle exports is clearly visible. Bajaj Auto accounted for approximately 43 percent of total exports in 2025, and TVS Motor accounted for 29 percent. This means that together, these two companies accounted for approximately 72 percent of total exports. Bajaj Auto's exports are projected to increase from 1.6 million units in 2024 to 1.9 million units in 2025, while TVS Motor's exports are projected to increase from 0.9 million units to 1.3 million units.
