Delhi Police releases photo of drunk Audi driver who crushed 5 on footpath

Car driver Shekhar was trying to escape from the spot after crushing the people. But he could not run far and his car collided with a truck.

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has released a photo of the accused driver today on Sunday in a hit-and-run case where five people sleeping on a footpath in Vasant Vihar in Delhi were run over by a speeding Audi car late Saturday night, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Utsav Shekhar, has been arrested. This tragic incident happened at around 1:45 am. Five people have been seriously injured in the accident, who are being treated in hospital.

Car driver Shekhar was trying to escape from the spot after crushing the people. But he could not run far and his car collided with a truck. The collision was so severe that the car was badly damaged. The truck driver informed the police, then Shekhar was arrested from the spot.

Injured Identified

The injured in the incident have been identified as Ladhi (40), his daughter Bimla (8), husband Sabami alias Chirma (45), Ram Chander (45) and his wife Narayani (35). All of them are from Rajasthan and they are working as laborers in Delhi. At the time of the accident, all were sleeping on the footpath. The police team immediately admitted all the injured to Safdarjung Hospital, where their treatment is underway.

Eyewitness Informed Police

Injured Sabami told the police that when they were all sleeping, suddenly a white Audi car came and ran over them. Immediately after the accident, a stranger came to him and wrote the car number on a piece of paper. Based on this information, the police started the investigation.

How the arrest was made

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West District) Amit Goyal said that during the investigation, it was found that an Audi car had collided with a truck. On matching the car number, it was found that this was the same vehicle that crushed the labourers sleeping on the footpath. The police reached the spot and took the accused Shekhar into custody. Medical examination has confirmed that Shekhar was drunk.

Legal Action

The police have registered a case against Shekhar under sections like negligent driving, causing an accident under the influence of alcohol and endangering life. The car has been seized and a thorough investigation into the matter is underway.
