ASI Sandeep takes his life in Rohtak after IPS Y Puran Kumar; Leaves three-page note
The family alleged that ASI Sandeep Lathar was being harassed after he arrested the gunman of the late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who had died by suicide in Chandigarh on October 7. The gunman was reportedly involved in a bribery case. Sandeep had reportedly shared details of this alleged harassment with his family just two days before his own death.
“Our brother is a martyr. He stood against corruption just as Bhagat Singh fought against the British,” said Sandeep’s cousin, Shishpal Lathar.
He added, “The government should investigate Y. Puran Kumar’s assets, reportedly worth Rs 2,000–3,000 crore,” and demanded a fair and impartial probe into the matter.
ASI Lathar left behind a three-page suicide note and a video message alleging corruption and harassment by the late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar.
In the note, Lathar claimed he feared being falsely implicated in ongoing investigations and described his death as a form of protest to demand an impartial inquiry. The allegations also implicated other senior officials, highlighting systemic issues within the local police administration.
The family has demanded the immediate arrest of Amneet P Kumar, alleging her role in the harassment that drove ASI Lathar to suicide. They also seek the suspension of officers named in Lathar’s note and permanent security for the family, citing threats and mental distress.
Family members and supporters have staged a continuous protest at the site, refusing to bury or cremate Lathar until their demands are addressed.

The Haryana government has so far adopted a cautious approach, closely monitoring the situation while the Chandigarh Police conducts its investigation. Officials have not directly engaged with the family, emphasizing the need for due process in light of the serious allegations.
The case has drawn widespread attention, particularly because it follows a second police officer’s suicide connected to the same corruption probe.
The protest has sparked tensions in Rohtak, with community members expressing concern over police harassment, corruption, and caste-based discrimination. Civil society groups and media reports are calling for transparent investigations and accountability within the police force. Authorities continue to appeal to locals for calm while ensuring the family’s demands are investigated responsibly.
