Dhaka: Gobinda Chandra Pramanik, General Secretary of the Bangladesh National Hindu Mahajote, has announced his intention to challenge the Election Commission's decision.

He will appeal against the Election Commission's rejection of his nomination papers for the upcoming elections.

Pramanik had filed his nomination as an independent candidate from the Gopalganj-3 constituency, considered a stronghold of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

What did the Hindu leader Pramanik say?
According to election rules, an independent candidate from this constituency is required to submit a consent form with the signatures of at least 3,086 voters.

Election Commission officials found during verification that many signatures could not be authenticated, leading to the invalidation of his nomination.

Speaking to a news agency about the Election Commission's decision, Pramanik said he hoped for a review of the process and would appeal against the decision.

Hindu leader had made allegations
However, Pramanik had told a media outlet that he had submitted genuine signatures, but workers of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) intimidated and threatened his supporters, forcing them to lie to the officials. This, he claimed, led to the rejection of his nomination.

Continuous attacks on minorities
This electoral development comes at a time when the minority community in Bangladesh is living in fear, and reports of attacks on them are constantly emerging. Recently, a horrific incident occurred on New Year's Eve, in which a Hindu man named Khokan Das was brutally murdered. The attackers assaulted him with sharp weapons and then set him on fire after dousing him with petrol. Das jumped into a nearby pond to save himself, but he died during treatment in Dhaka due to severe burns.

Three accused arrested
Taking action in this murder case, Bangladesh's elite force, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), has arrested three accused: Sohag, Rabbi, and Palash. Based on intelligence information, a RAB team raided the Bajitpur area of Kishoreganj and apprehended the suspects. Superintendent of Police Raunak Jahan confirmed that the victim, Khokan Das, had identified the attackers before he died, and the action was taken based on his statement.
