Tehran: Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as the country’s new Supreme Leader.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has been killed in an airstrike targeting government facilities in Tehran on 28 February.

According to reports, the strike allegedly hit the Supreme Leader’s office in Tehran, resulting in the death of the 86-year-old leader.

Mojtaba Khamenei Named as Successor

Born in 1969 in Mashhad, Mojtaba Khamenei received a traditional religious education and is believed to have served with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the final stages of the Iran-Iraq conflict.

Though he never held a prominent formal government post, he was widely considered a trusted and influential advisor to his father, often described as playing a significant behind-the-scenes role in strategic decisions.

He was long regarded as having strong ties with Iran’s military and paramilitary institutions.

Controversy and 2009 Protests

Mojtaba Khamenei first came into broader public focus during the 2009 protests that followed Iran’s presidential election. At the time, opposition figures and activists alleged that he was involved in the government’s response to the demonstrations, including the suppression of protests — claims that were never officially substantiated.
