Khartoum: A sudden massive landslide in Sudan's western Darfur region has caused massive destruction, with about 1,000 people feared dead. According to the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army (SLM-A), the landslide occurred on Sunday in a village called Tarasin, located in the Marrah Mountains of central Darfur, after several days of continuous heavy rains. This incident is being counted among the worst natural disasters in recent years.

Almost every resident in Tarasin village died SLM-A said that according to initial reports, almost all the residents of Tarasin village have died in this landslide. The village has been completely destroyed by this devastating incident and only one person has been reported alive. According to the estimated number, about a thousand people have fallen victim to this disaster.

UN and international aid requested Cooperation has been sought from the United Nations and other international aid organizations to help in relief and rescue operations after the landslide. Videos released by local media show the entire space between the mountains flattened and people searching for people buried under the rubble.

Civil War in Sudan

It is also worth noting that Sudan is currently going through a serious civil war situation, with conflict between the country's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continuing since April 2023. This fighting has made it difficult for the United Nations and relief organizations to reach areas like the Darfur region and the Marrah Mountains.

Displaced People Increased In Marrah Mountains

The Marrah Mountains region, which is about 160 kilometers long volcanic mountain region, has become a shelter for thousands of displaced families. The region is about 900 kilometers from the capital Khartoum and several rebel groups are active here, including the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, which is not directly associated with any side.

The long conflict has so far killed more than 40,000 people and displaced more than 14 million people. Famine-like conditions have arisen in different parts of the country, forcing people to eat grass to survive. The United Nations and human rights organizations have reported serious crimes such as ethnic violence, massacres and rape, while the International Criminal Court (ICC) has started investigating war crimes.
