Assam Govt Challenges Telangana HC Order in SC
New Delhi: The Assam government has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the relief granted to Congress leader Pawan Khera. The petition challenges the Telangana High Court's order granting Khera a one-week transit anticipatory bail. The matter relates to a case filed in Assam in which Khera is accused of making serious allegations.
The controversy began when Pawan Khera accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, of possessing multiple foreign passports and undeclared assets. Following Khera's statements, a case was filed against him in Assam. Fearing arrest in this case, he approached the court.
Telangana HC grants interim bail to congress leader Pawan Khera amid passport allegations case
The Telangana High Court granted Khera temporary relief by granting him transit anticipatory bail for a week. The court also directed him to apply for regular bail in the appropriate court. However, the court also questioned why the petition was filed in Telangana when his address in the documents was in Delhi.
During the hearing, the court raised an important legal point. The court found that Khera's wife Neelima's address in the documents was in Delhi. The court questioned the jurisdiction of the petition and directed the submission of her latest Aadhaar card at the next hearing.
The Assam government has now approached the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's decision. The government argues that the grant of transit bail was unjustified and should be set aside. The Supreme Court is likely to hear the petition soon.
