India to Witness Nerve Chilling Winter Ahead, Warns IMD
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an important warning regarding this year's winter weather. According to the department, the winter of 2025 may be colder and longer than normal.
This is primarily due to a climate condition called La Nina, which has a major impact on the global weather system.
La Nina is a cold phase of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In this phase, sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean drop below normal. This change affects global atmospheric circulation, altering rainfall, winter, and storm patterns.
ENSO has three phases:
These cycles vary every two to seven years. This year, there are signs of La Nina, which is likely to lead to more severe and earlier winters in India.
Areas like Delhi-NCR, Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad are experiencing light fog and cold mornings. The retreating monsoon is expected to bring light rain in the coming weeks, further intensifying the cold.

Snowfall has already begun in hilly states like Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, causing temperatures to drop sharply.
Not just North India, South India will also be untouched by this change. Above-normal rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh during the northeast monsoon, which lasts from October to December. The IMD estimates that these regions could receive up to 112% of the average.
As temperatures drop in Delhi and its surrounding areas, air pollution is also increasing. Currently, air quality is in the "moderate" category, but as the cold increases, it could move into the "poor" category, impacting health.
From monsoon to mist, early winter chill grips North India
The IMD has advised citizens to prepare for winter in advance, especially the elderly and children. This weather change is also important for farmers, as extreme cold can affect crops.
Weather Update: No rain expected till Diwali; dry spell till October 20 brings cheer to farmers
Overall, this year's winter may be harsher and longer than in previous years. The effects of La Niña will be felt across the country, and citizens will need to exercise caution. Now is the time to prepare in advance to face winter.
