New Delhi/Lucknow: Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar today on Thursday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh at Kisan Ghat here in Delhi, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Vice-President said that Chaudhary Charan Singh love for rural India and farmers can never be forgotten. Charan Singh was called the messiah of farmers without doing farming.

While talking to the media, Vice-President Dhankhar said, “The entire life of Chaudhary Saheb was dedicated to the farmers and villages. He worked for the farmers even in pre-Independent India… He played a pivotal role in granting the ownership to those farmers working in agricultural fields, but didn’t have rights over it…”

UP CM Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on his death anniversary in Lucknow on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Yogi Adityanath said, '…As the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the steps he took for land reform, rural development and transparency of governance in Uttar Pradesh can still be heard and seen in our villages…

'The steps taken for rural development and the upliftment of farmers in the last 11 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi are proving to be revolutionary. I pay my humble tribute to him on behalf of the people of the state.'

Chaudhary Charan Singh: Brief Profile

Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902 in Mandaiya village of Noorpur in Meerut. Later his family moved from Mandaiya of Noorpur to Bhupgarhi village near Jani. Soon they moved to Bhadaula village near Kharkhoda.

Chaudhary Charan Singh completed his studies and then obtained a law degree from Agra University.

After his law degree Chaudhary Charan Singh started as a lawyer from Ghaziabad. Then he came to Meerut in 1929 and later joined the Congress.

As MLA

He was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Chhaprauli in 1937 and represented his constituency in the assembly in 1946, 1952, 1962 and 1967.

Chaudhary Charan Singh became Parliamentary Secretary in the government of Pandit Govind Vallabh Pant in the year 1946. He worked in many departments including Medical and Public Health, Revenue, Justice and Information.

Minister In UP

In June 1951, Chaudhary Charan Singh was appointed as the Cabinet Minister of the state. During this time he was given charge of Justice and Information departments. Then 1952, he became the Revenue and Agriculture Minister in the cabinet of Dr. Sampurnanand. When Chaudhary Charan Singh resigned from his post in April 1959, he was in charge of the Revenue and Transport Department at that time.

UP CM

In 1967, Charan Singh became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh but in 1968, he resigned from the post of Chief Minister.

Later Chaudhary Charan Singh moved to tge Centre and became the Home Minister. As Home Minister he established Mandal and Minority Commission, National Agricultural Rural Development Bank NABARD, Consolidation Law, Zamindari Abolition Bill and Rural Development Bank.

Finally Chaudhary Charan Singh became the Prime Minister between July 1979 to January 1980. During this time he made many policies for the upliftment and development of farmers.

Chaudhary Charan Singh throughout his life struggled for the welfare of the farmers.

This 'Messiah' of farmers brethed his last on 29 May 1987.
