IMD issues yellow alert as rain hits national capital (Img: Internet)
New Delhi: Residents of Delhi received relief from the intense summer heat on Saturday as temperatures dropped and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for light rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across the national capital and nearby regions.
According to the IMD, weather conditions are expected to remain unstable through the weekend, with similar activity likely to continue on Sunday as well. The department warned that gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph may affect several parts of Delhi during the afternoon and evening hours.

Safdarjung, considered Delhi’s primary weather monitoring station, recorded a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning. The temperature was nearly two degrees below the seasonal average and lower than the previous day’s reading, indicating a noticeable cooling trend across the city.

The IMD also predicted that the maximum temperature would remain between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, offering relief after days of hotter weather conditions in the capital.
The weather department stated that light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in multiple areas of Delhi-NCR. Officials said the yellow alert has been issued to caution residents about possible weather-related disruptions, including traffic congestion, waterlogging in low-lying areas and temporary power interruptions due to strong winds.
Authorities advised people to remain cautious while travelling during evening hours, especially in areas vulnerable to tree falls or reduced visibility during sudden rain spells.

Along with cooler weather, Delhi also witnessed a significant improvement in air quality. According to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 82 on Saturday morning, placing it in the “satisfactory” category.
This marks an improvement compared to Friday’s average AQI of 123, which fell under the “moderate” category.
Meteorologists attributed the changing weather conditions to the influence of a western disturbance, cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining regions, along with moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has indicated that fluctuating weather conditions may continue in Delhi-NCR over the next few days, with intermittent rain and cloud activity expected across the region.
