Heavy snowfall grips North India as Kedarnath drops to -13°C; Here’s full weather update

A fresh western disturbance and strong jet streams have brought sharp weather changes across North India. Heavy snowfall in Himalayan states, especially Kedarnath where temperatures plunged to -13°C, has intensified cold conditions in plains as well.

New Delhi: The weather pattern has completely changed due to an active Western Disturbance over North India and a strong jet stream in the upper atmosphere. Following rain and snowfall in the Himalayan states, intense cold and fog have increased in the plains. Minimum temperatures are being recorded below normal in many areas, disrupting daily life.

Kedarnath temperature drops to -13 degrees

Continuous snowfall is occurring in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand. The temperature in Kedarnath has dropped to -13°C, while fresh layers of snow have also accumulated in Badrinath, Auli, Munsiyari, and Harshil. Due to frost in the mornings and evenings, temperatures remain below 10°C in many areas.

According to the Meteorological Department, the active Western Disturbance at the middle level and the jet stream flowing at a speed of 115 knots at an altitude of approximately 12.6 km have increased the cold and cloud formation activity. As a result, night temperatures are falling rapidly in North India.

Cold wave and fog in the plains

Light rain, dense fog, and northerly winds have intensified the cold in the plains. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the minimum temperature in the plains may remain between 4 and 7°C, while in the mountainous regions it may drop below freezing.

In the Niti Valley of Chamoli, after the snowfall, villagers have returned to their winter residences, and only a few homestay operators remain in the area.

Cold wave warning in Central India

Cold wave conditions are likely to prevail in Madhya Pradesh, North Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh on December 9th. Temperatures are expected to be significantly below normal in many areas. Temperatures may also drop in Odisha, and dense fog may persist.

A further drop of 2-3°C in temperature is expected in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra over the next two to three days. The maximum temperature in the country was recorded at 35.4°C in Karwar, Karnataka, and the minimum at 2.6°C in Adampur, Punjab. Dense fog is likely to persist in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until December 12. This could affect road and air traffic.

A cyclone is active in the eastern Bay of Bengal, due to which wind speeds could reach up to 55 km/h. A warning has been issued to fishermen advising them not to venture into the sea due to high waves.

Yellow Alert for Rain, Snowfall, and Fog in Himachal Pradesh

Rain and snowfall are expected in the higher reaches of Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra, and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday. A yellow alert for fog has been issued for Bilaspur and Mandi on December 9. The weather is expected to remain dry towards the end of the week.

Cold Intensifies in Jammu and Kashmir, Pahalgam Coldest Place

Minimum temperatures have dropped below freezing point in several places in Jammu and Kashmir. Pahalgam was the coldest place, recording a temperature of -4.3°C. The temperature in Srinagar was -0.9°C. Light snowfall is possible in the mountainous regions of North and Central Kashmir, and people have been advised to remain vigilant.
