Winter Session Erupts: LS Adjourned Amid SIR Uproar
New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament began on Monday. The session traditionally began with a tribute to deceased MPs. However, as proceedings progressed, the atmosphere in the House became heated. The opposition in the Lok Sabha began raising slogans over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue, forcing multiple adjournments on the very first day of the session.
The opposition continued to insist on a detailed discussion on the SIR issue in the House.
Amid the uproar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla repeatedly attempted to maintain order, but the opposition's continued uproar forced the proceedings to be adjourned until 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
The opposition claims that the SIR process is not transparent and could impact the electoral process. Therefore, they want to raise this issue as a priority in the House.
Parliament Winter Session: Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 PM amid Opposition protests over SIR
Despite opposition uproar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill in the House.
The bill was passed by voice vote amid the uproar.
The Finance Minister presented the key points of the bill to the House. Despite opposition protests, the government easily secured its passage, which the opposition described as a "unilateral move."
A total of 15 sittings are scheduled for the session, which runs until December 19.
The Modi government is preparing to introduce 10 new bills, including one on atomic energy, in this session.
This is the sixth session of the 18th Lok Sabha, and it is expected that the government will want to move forward quickly on legislative work.
The opposition, meanwhile, has prepared to corner the government on issues such as SIR, vote theft, the Delhi bombings, Manipur, and foreign policy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the media before the start of the session, said that the focus in Parliament should now be on delivery, not drama.
He urged the opposition to rise above the politics of victory and defeat and engage in discussions in the national interest. The opposition reacted strongly to the PM's statement.
Congress MP KC Venugopal said: "Before making a statement, the Prime Minister should think about who started the sloganeering. Who raised the "Modi-Modi" slogans?"
Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav also sharply retorted, saying that the government itself is running away from the issues and calling the opposition "drama."
Winter Session Begins: PM Modi tells opposition; “No drama, only delivery in Parliament”
The atmosphere of the winter session has been confrontational since the beginning.
Given the opposition's aggressive stance on SIR and the government's legislative priorities, heated debates and controversies are likely to continue in the House in the coming days.
