Opposition Protest in Parliament Over Special Intensive Revision
New Delhi: The winter session of Parliament entered its second day on Tuesday. During the session, opposition INDI alliance MPs staged a vehement protest demanding a discussion on the Special Revision (SIR) and electoral reforms. During the protest, the MPs raised slogans near the Makar Gate in the Parliament complex. Congress MP Manickam Tagore stated that the alliance has decided to intensify the protests.
On Monday, the first day of the session witnessed a massive uproar in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. Opposition MPs attempted to pressure the government on the SIR issue. Opposition MPs created a ruckus in the Rajya Sabha and were eventually forced to walk out. The opposition alleged that the government was not taking the voter list revision seriously. Meanwhile, the government clarified that it was not averse to discussing the SIR, but setting a specific timeframe was not possible.

On the second day of the winter session, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will introduce the Central Excise Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha. This bill proposes to increase excise duty and cess on products such as tobacco and pan masala. Its purpose is to streamline the cess levied on 'sin goods' in the event of the abolition of the GST compensation cess. On the first day, the Finance Minister also introduced two bills aimed at reforming the tax system.

Opposition leaders allege that the government is preventing important issues from being discussed in Parliament. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the opposition is only demanding democratic discussion, while the government is trying to suppress them through accusations. The opposition has made it clear that they are ready to openly discuss all important issues in Parliament, but they are not being given the opportunity.
