Supreme Court refuses plea mandatory of six airbags in car

The court said that this is completely a matter related to the government’s policy and it would not be right for the court to interfere in it. A bench of Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran asked the petitioner to put his point directly in front of the government.

New Delhi: On July 24, the Supreme Court in an important decision rejected the petition in which it was demanded to make it mandatory to install 6 airbags in passenger cars. The court said that this is completely a matter related to the government's policy and it would not be right for the court to interfere in it. A bench of Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran asked the petitioner to put his point directly in front of the government.

This decision has once again highlighted the ongoing debate about the safety of vehicles in India. Although many people demand to increase safety in cars, the court made it clear that it is the government's job to take policy decisions, not the court's.

Maruti increased the price due to 6 air bags
This decision of the Supreme Court has come at a time when the country's largest auto company Maruti has announced a 0.8% increase in the prices of its XL6 model. The company told the stock market that the reason for increasing the price is the addition of 6 airbags.

The petitioner had given an application to the government on May 17, stating that not making airbags mandatory violates the rights given in the Constitution. The petition said that this matter is a violation of Article 14 (equality before the law) and Article 21 (protection of life and personal liberty) of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court said this big thing in the decision
The Supreme Court said in its decision that it is the government's job to set safety standards for vehicles. The bench also said that if the petitioner has already applied to the government, then the government will consider it as per its policy. Let us tell you that from October 1, 2022, the government has made it mandatory to provide 6 airbags in M1 category and 8 seater cars.
