Supreme Court seeks clarity on Bihar voter deletion under SIR from EC; Full details

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Election Commission to submit the complete details of the 3.66 lakh voters removed from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar by October 9th. This order was given during the hearing of petitions related to the SIR process in Bihar.

Election Commission Must Submit Details By 9 October

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi directed the Election Commission to submit all the information it has to the court by Thursday. After this, further hearings will be held on the petitions challenging the SIR process. The court noted that the draft voter list is available to all parties, and the final list was published on 30 September. Therefore, the necessary data can be provided through comparative analysis.

Election Commission Clarification

The Election Commission told the Supreme Court that most of the names removed under the SIR are new voters, while some old voters are also included. The Commission also stated that no complaint or appeal has yet been filed in court on behalf of the removed voters. The Commission also clarified that most of those approaching the court regarding this issue are Delhi-based politicians and non-governmental organizations.

Justice Bagchi told senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, representing the Election Commission, that the court's orders have increased both transparency and accessibility in the electoral process.
