New Delhi: Capital residents, currently grappling with scorching heat, will have to wait a bit longer for the monsoon. The Meteorological Department has predicted the arrival date of the monsoon in the capital. The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 4—three days later than its usual onset date—but reached Maharashtra on schedule. This has raised hopes that the monsoon could reach Delhi around its normal time later this month.
The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, which was a few days past its usual arrival date of June 1 and about a week later than the Meteorological Department's earlier forecast of May 26. However, it subsequently advanced rapidly; by June 5, it had covered large parts of the western coast of Goa, and by June 6, it had entered Maharashtra.
According to the IMD's monsoon tracking map, the monsoon is expected to reach Delhi and the NCR between June 25 and June 30. The same timeframe is anticipated for Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and surrounding areas. After reaching Delhi, the monsoon is expected to move northwestwards into parts of Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Last year, the Southwest Monsoon reached Delhi on June 29, which was two days behind its normal onset date of June 27 (based on the 1961–2019 average).
Hot weather conditions are likely to persist in Delhi over the next seven days. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 36°C and 41°C, while minimum temperatures will hover between 26°C and 29°C.
