Veteran SP leader Ramgovind Chaudhary passes away.
Lucknow: Extremely sad news has emerged from the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh. Ramgovind Chaudhary, a senior Samajwadi Party leader, Leader of the Opposition, and former Cabinet Minister, passed away on Friday at PGI Lucknow. He breathed his last at the age of 74. News of his demise has sent a wave of grief through the Samajwadi Party and political circles.
Reports indicate that he had been in poor health for some time and was undergoing treatment at PGI, where he eventually passed away on Friday.

Ram Govind Chaudhary hailed from Ballia. He was born on September 7, 1953, in Gosaipur village. He won his first Assembly election from the Chilkahar constituency in 1977.
He was elected as an MLA in 1980, 1985, 1989, and 1991. Subsequently, he won the election from the Bansdih constituency. He served as a minister in the governments led by Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav. In 2017, he was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.
Ramgovind Chaudhary was a prominent figure in the socialist movement. He was active in Uttar Pradesh politics for a long time and was known for his strong hold over the Bansdih assembly constituency in Ballia district. Throughout his political career, he shouldered significant responsibilities and served as an MLA eight times.
Ramgovind Chaudhary held a position of great stature within the SP. He regarded Chandrashekhar as his political mentor and began his political journey with the Janata Party. He later joined forces with the then-SP supremo Mulayam Singh in 2002.
Having engaged in SP politics alongside Mulayam, Chaudhary was also considered close to Akhilesh Yadav. Following the SP's crushing defeat in the 2017 assembly elections, Akhilesh decided to entrust him with the role of Leader of the Opposition, bypassing several other senior leaders. The eight-time MLA hailed from Ballia.
Samajwadi Party leaders and workers have expressed deep sorrow over Ramgovind Chaudhary's passing. Party leaders stated that his death marks a significant loss for the socialist movement. A pall of gloom has descended upon his supporters and party workers, stretching from Ballia to Lucknow.
Ramgovind Chaudhary's political career spanned several decades. He centered his politics around issues concerning villages, farmers, and the common people. His passing marks the end of a chapter for a veteran socialist leader in Uttar Pradesh politics.
