Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday raised concerns over the ongoing vote counting process, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged ahead with a strong lead in the Assembly elections.
Early trends showed the BJP leading in 181 seats, well past the majority mark, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was trailing at 90.
In her first reaction, Banerjee appealed to party workers and supporters to remain at counting centres, claiming that the numbers being reported were not accurate.

In a video message released around noon, the TMC chief alleged discrepancies in the counting data. She claimed that her party was ahead in nearly 100 constituencies, but those figures were not being reflected in the official trends.

“The numbers being fed are fake,” Banerjee said, adding that the actual picture would become clearer as counting progresses.
She also alleged that trends from constituencies where the TMC was leading were not being properly displayed.

Expressing confidence, Banerjee said the electoral outcome could shift after more rounds of counting. She noted that significant changes often occur after 14 to 18 rounds, suggesting that early leads may not hold.
Her statement appeared aimed at boosting morale among party workers amid the BJP’s early dominance.
The Bhabanipur seat witnessed shifting trends through the initial rounds. Banerjee led early, then fell behind, before regaining ground in subsequent updates.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was trailing in Bhabanipur but continued to lead in Nandigram, keeping the contest closely watched.
With the BJP crossing the halfway mark in early trends, the party appears set for a major breakthrough in a state it has never governed. If the trend sustains, it could signal a significant shift in West Bengal’s political landscape.
However, with counting still underway, the final outcome remains uncertain as both sides await clearer trends.
