Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress soon after polling concluded in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.

West Bengal Polls 2026: Massive 90% voter turnout till 5 pm in phase 1; BJP, TMC make strong claims
The first phase of polling recorded an impressive 91.46% turnout, making it one of the highest participation rates in recent years. Voting was held across 152 constituencies, with nearly 3.6 crore eligible voters taking part.
Polling concluded at 6 PM, with steady voter participation reported throughout the day, reflecting strong public engagement in the electoral process.
Earlier in the day, Shah addressed several rallies, including in Hooghly district, where he raised concerns over illegal immigration. He said strict measures would be implemented to curb unlawful entry if the BJP comes to power.
The issue has been a central theme in the party’s campaign, along with governance and development promises.
The Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, dismissed the BJP’s claims and offered a contrasting interpretation of the high turnout.
Party leaders argued that the strong voter participation reflects public support for the government’s policies and development work, rather than a demand for political change.

The high turnout has triggered a political debate, with both sides drawing different conclusions. While the BJP sees it as a sign of shifting voter sentiment, the TMC maintains it signals continued trust in its leadership.
The remaining constituencies will vote on April 29, while counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. With record turnout and intense political exchanges, the election remains closely contested.
