Chennai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Tamil Nadu for a two-day visit, signaling the Bharatiya Janata Party’s renewed efforts to strengthen its position ahead of the Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was welcomed at Trichy Airport by Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran, Union Minister Piyush Goyal, and other party leaders.

The Union Home Minister attended the concluding ceremony of the “Tamilagam Thalai Nimira Tamilan Payanam” pilgrimage as a special guest. The visit began in Pudukottai district, where Shah participated in the culmination of a statewide organizational tour led by Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran. The highways were lined with BJP flags, and the venue was designed with prominent saffron symbolism, emphasizing the party’s focus on projecting cohesion and momentum at a time when the NDA faces significant challenges in the Dravidian heartland.

Reviving Alliances Amid Challenges

The BJP has recently revived its ties with former ally AIADMK, aiming to form a viable pre-poll alliance capable of challenging the DMK-led front. However, the electoral landscape remains fragmented, with AIADMK facing internal disputes, PMK witnessing a public father-son feud, and DMDK yet to finalize its stance. Key former allies, including O Panneerselvam and TTV Dhinakaran, have exited the NDA, complicating alliance prospects. The entry of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam adds further uncertainty, potentially altering traditional vote patterns in the state.

Sharpening the Attack on the Ruling Front

During the visit, Amit Shah is expected to intensify the BJP’s critique of the DMK government, highlighting issues such as crimes against women, alleged deterioration in law and order, and rising drug abuse. The ruling DMK continues to counter these claims by accusing the central government of withholding funds, imposing Hindi, and undermining federal principles. By emphasizing governance concerns, the BJP hopes to position itself as a credible alternative in a state where the DMK has secured three consecutive victories and maintains a confident alliance.

Cultural Outreach in Trichy

On the second day of his visit, Amit Shah will travel to Trichy to participate in Pongal celebrations. The BJP aims to use this cultural engagement to connect with voters on both a social and political level. Observers see the visit as a strategic move to energize the party cadre, fine-tune alliances, and signal determination in a state where the NDA has historically struggled to make significant inroads. The combination of political messaging and cultural participation is intended to broaden the party’s appeal ahead of the polls.
