New Delhi: India will look to continue its impressive start at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as several medal contenders take the field on Day 2 across para powerlifting, boxing, swimming, gymnastics and lawn bowls.
The Indian contingent opened its campaign on a positive note, with Lovlina Borgohain securing a boxing medal after receiving a direct semifinal berth. Lawn bowler Putul Sonowal also made headlines by defeating world champion Ryan Bester in the men's singles sectional play.
India's biggest medal prospects on Friday come from para powerlifting at the SEC Armadillo.
Ashok and Parmjeet Kumar will compete in the men's lightweight final, while Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi will contest the women's lightweight final. Later in the evening, Kasthuri Rajamani will compete in the women's heavyweight final before Sudhir and Jhandu Kumar take part in the men's heavyweight final after midnight (IST).
India's boxing challenge continues with Jadumani Singh taking on Scotland's Aaron Cullen in the men's 55kg Round of 32.
In swimming, Ravi Veera Venkata Bhavani Karthik Budigna and Imam Ali will compete in the men's S13 100m freestyle heats, while Srihari Natraj will begin his campaign in the men's 50m backstroke heats.
The artistic gymnastics team comprising Tapan Mohanty, Swathish KP, Tapeshwarnath Das and Yogeshwar Singh will compete in the men's team final and individual qualification.
India's lawn bowls campaign will also continue with Pinki and Rupa Rani Tirkey facing South Africa in the women's pairs sectional play. Putul Sonowal, fresh from his upset victory over world champion Ryan Bester, will return to the greens to face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands in the men's singles.

Several Indian athletes could also return later in the day for finals and semifinals, subject to qualification, as the country aims to add to its medal tally.
