Lucknow: The process of updating the voter list in Uttar Pradesh is currently underway. During the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), it is now estimated that more than three crore names may be removed from the state's voter list. According to reports from the districts, a large number of voters have been identified who are absent, shifted, already registered elsewhere, or deceased – falling under the ASD (Absent, Shifted, Deceased) category.

Revision Process Timeline
According to the official report of 27 October, a total of 15 Crore, forty four Lakh and thirty thousand ninety two (154430092) voters are registered in the state. Following this, the Election Commission initiated a major cleanup of the voter list under the SIR. During this campaign, enumeration forms can be filled and submitted until 11 December. During this period, deceased voters, absent voters, those registered at another location, and those who have changed their residence are being identified in all districts.

Several Districts Complete SIR Work
According to the latest information from the Election Commission, districts like Auraiya, Azamgarh, and Etah have completed 100% of the SIR work. In Etah district, which has a total of 1,311,967 voters, 18 percent of voters were found to be in the ASD category. District Election Officer and DM Prem Ranjan confirmed that the process of removing these names from the voter list will begin as soon as the December 11 deadline is met.

Names To Be Removed Across The State
According to officials involved in the SIR, analysis of the entries received so far and reports from the districts indicates that approximately 6% of absent, 10% of shifted, and 4% of deceased voters' names will be removed across the state. When these figures are applied to the total number of voters in the state, the number exceeds three crore. In this way, long-standing errors in the voter list are being corrected on a large scale. Why has the number increased so significantly?

1. Rapid urbanization and migration - A large number of people are constantly changing districts for jobs, education, and business.

2. Outdated lists not updated for years - Many names remained on the list for a long time, even though the individuals no longer lived there.

3. Failure to report deaths - Due to families not reporting deaths, the names of deceased individuals remained on the list for years.

4. Duplicate registrations - In many cases, a person's name was found to be registered in two places.

Final Verification
After 11 December, all forms and digital data submitted by the districts will be subjected to a final verification. Following this, the Election Commission will issue an official order, according to which the names found in the ASD (Absent, Shifted, or Deceased) category will be removed. The process of registering new voters, updating addresses, and making corrections will also be finalized. The final voter list is likely to be published in early January 2026.
