Manipur: President's rule was imposed in Manipur in view of the tension for a long time. But after the sudden meeting of BJP leaders with the Governor on Wednesday, the exercise to form the government in the state has started gaining momentum.

BJP has staked claim to form the government. BJP leader Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, after meeting Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Wednesday, has claimed that 44 MLAs are ready to form a new government in the state. He met the Governor at Raj Bhavan along with nine other MLAs.

Radheshyam Singh said, "As per the wishes of the people, 44 MLAs are ready to form the government. We have told this to the Governor. We also discussed what solutions can be found for this issue."

On February 13 this year, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. After this, President's rule was imposed there. It has been 103 days since President's rule was imposed in the state. After this, now BJP has again staked claim to form a new government. This stir in Manipur has come to the fore at a time when on May 29, PM Modi is going to participate in the Jubilee celebrations organized on the joining of Sikkim to India. Earlier, the security of former CM N Biren Singh was also reduced in Manipur. 17 policemen have been removed from his security.

The high command will take further decision

BJP MLA Thokchom Radheshyam Singh said that we told the Governor that 44 MLAs are ready. We have presented the claim, now the central BJP leadership will take the final decision. Singh claimed that Speaker Satyavrat has met all 44 MLAs individually and collectively. There is no opposition to the formation of a new government.

President's rule since February

Manipur has been under President's rule since February, when Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepped down amid criticism over his handling of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Jo communities. More than 250 people have died and thousands have been displaced in the conflict that began in May 2023. One of the 60 seats in the Manipur Assembly is currently vacant.

The unrest in Manipur primarily involved clashes between the majority Meitei community and the minority Kuki-Zomi tribes. Tensions escalated over disputes related to economic benefits, job quotas, and land rights. The violence resulted in hundreds of fatalities and displaced approximately 60,000 individuals.
