Israel strikes Iranian factory in Tehran
New Delhi: Israel claimed responsibility for a strike on a facility in Tehran on Wednesday, alleging it was linked to the production or supply of fentanyl that could potentially be used in chemical weapons. The targeted site, identified as the Tofigh Daru pharmaceutical factory, was confirmed hit by Iran-though Iranian authorities strongly denied any military connection.
Iran Condemns Strike, Calls It an Attack on Healthcare Infrastructure
Iranian officials rejected Israel’s accusations, insisting the facility manufactures medicines strictly for hospital use. Abbas Araqchi publicly criticized the strike, stating that Israel is “openly and shamelessly bombing pharmaceutical companies,” framing the attack as a violation of international norms.
Fentanyl, while medically vital for managing extreme pain, is an अत्यंत potent substance—even trace amounts can be lethal—making it a focal point of concern in dual-use weaponization debates.
US and Israel Raise Alarms Over Weaponization Claims
Both United States and Israel have previously alleged that Iran is exploring ways to incorporate fentanyl into unconventional weapons. According to these claims, the Tehran-based research body SPND may have received supplies from the targeted facility.
The U.S. has also referenced Iranian research analyzing the use of fentanyl-like agents in incidents such as the Moscow theater hostage crisis, where a chemical agent was reportedly deployed.
Iran has dismissed all such allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
Maritime Attacks Surge Across the Persian Gulf
The conflict is expanding beyond land. Early Wednesday, a commercial vessel near Qatar was struck by a projectile, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations. Fortunately, no casualties or environmental damage were reported.
A separate incident involved a Kuwaiti tanker near Dubai. Since hostilities intensified, more than 20 ships have reportedly been targeted in the Persian Gulf, raising concerns about global energy security and shipping safety.
Missile Fired from Yemen Intercepted by Israel
In another escalation, a missile launched from Yemen toward Israel was intercepted by Israeli defense systems. Sirens were heard across southern Israel, though no casualties or damage have been reported.
Rising Regional Instability
With airstrikes, maritime attacks, and missile launches occurring simultaneously, tensions between Israel and Iran are entering a more volatile phase. The growing involvement of regional actors and strategic waterways signals a broader risk of escalation that could impact global security and trade routes.
