BJP’s strong performance in Gujarat Local Body Elections; captures 10 out of 15 Municipal Corporations

Gandhinagar: The counting of votes for local body elections in Gujarat began at 8:00 AM on April 28. Delivering a spectacular performance, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a political advantage by registering victories in 10 out of the 15 municipal corporations. These elections are being viewed as a crucial indicator of public sentiment ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for next year.

Voting for 5 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats across the state took place on April 26, 2026. A total of 9,200 seats went to the polls in this election, with over 4.18 crore voters eligible to cast their ballots.

Voter turnout 55.1 percent

According to data from the Election Commission, a voter turnout of 55.1 percent was recorded in the municipal corporations. Meanwhile, voter turnout stood at 65.53 percent in municipalities, 66.64 percent in district panchayats, and 67.26 percent in taluka panchayats.

Apart from the BJP, candidates from the Indian National Congress (Congress), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) were also in the fray in this election.

BJP’s strong performance

The BJP emerged with the strongest performance in the election results, further consolidating its hold over urban local bodies. Political analysts believe that these results serve as a positive signal for the BJP ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, while also conveying a message to opposition parties to rethink their strategies.
