Delhi woke up to dark clouds, intermittent rain, and a sudden chill in the air. IMD has issued an orange alert- but what’s causing this dramatic weather twist? Find out what’s coming next!
Rain Transforms Delhi’s Mood Overnight
New Delhi: Several parts of Delhi and adjoining cities witnessed intermittent showers early Tuesday morning, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the national capital. As per the IMD’s nowcast, updated around 4:30 am, all districts of Delhi were placed under the orange category.
After days of humidity and heat, residents finally got a much-needed respite.
According to the IMD, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 26.5°C and a minimum of 21°C on Sunday about 7.7 degrees below normal. The sharp drop of nearly 7 degrees brought noticeable coolness throughout the day.
Unexpected rain and gusty winds hit North India; Know which areas are affected?
Light chills were felt in the morning and evening as humidity levels in the air rose, creating a refreshing atmosphere across the city.
The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall across Delhi-NCR on October 7 as well. Cloudy skies are expected to persist, with limited sunshine between October 8 and 12.
The ongoing Western Disturbance has triggered heavy rain and snowfall in the hilly states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, which is also influencing the weather in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Vidarbha.
Adjoining cities of Uttar Pradesh's Noida and Ghaziabad were also under an orange alert while Haryana's Gurugram and Faridabad were placed under a yellow warning.
This weather change has brought much-needed relief to Delhiites who were reeling under late monsoon heat.
Along with the pleasant weather, the rain has also helped clean Delhi’s air. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) improved significantly from 159 (‘moderate to poor’ category) on October 5 to 105 (‘moderate’ category) on October 6 — a drop of 54 points within just 24 hours.
Heavy rain in several areas of Delhi-NCR; IMD issues orange alert
Meteorologists say that due to rain, gusty winds, and cloudy skies, Delhi’s air quality is likely to remain better for the next few days. This temporary improvement is expected to provide relief from pollution before the Diwali season begins, when air quality usually worsens.
For now, Delhiites are enjoying a rare combination cool breeze, clean air, and a pleasant sky allowing them to step out for morning walks and outdoor activities, something that’s often difficult in the city’s typically smog-laden environment.
