New Delhi: The Meteorological Department has issued a major alert regarding severe heat and heatwaves across large parts of North India, including Delhi.
According to the department, temperatures in the national capital, Delhi, could reach between 44 and 45 degrees Celsius this week. In light of the continuously rising heat and the onslaught of heatwaves, people have been advised to remain vigilant and to avoid stepping out of their homes during the afternoon hours unless absolutely necessary.
Heat to Rise in Delhi; The Next Few Days Could Be Challenging
According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures in Delhi could rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next three days. On Sunday, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies, with a possibility of light rain accompanied by thunder later in the day.
During this period, strong winds blowing at speeds of 20 to 30 kilometers per hour are expected, with gusts potentially reaching up to 40 kilometers per hour. However, once the skies clear following this spell, the heat is expected to intensify even further.
The Meteorological Department has also noted that warm nights could exacerbate the discomfort for residents.
Heatwave Conditions to Persist in Several States Until May 22
According to the IMD (India Meteorological Department), heatwave conditions are likely to persist until May 22 in parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and the Konkan and Goa regions.
Maximum temperatures are rising rapidly across North and Central India, while the Western Himalayan regions are also expected to witness a rise in temperatures of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has warned that extreme heat poses a serious health risk.
Rain Forecast for Northeast and South India
While North India grapples with severe heat, the northeastern states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura—are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall.
Additionally, parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh are also forecast to receive rainfall accompanied by strong winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. Scattered light rain may also occur in Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.
