He held this position for about six months. Then, in January 2020, he was formally elected as the national president of the BJP. Nadda has now been serving as the party chief for almost six years.
Nitin Nabin BJP's new working president
New Delhi: BJP's new working president, Nitin Naveen, is only the second person in the party's history to hold this position. The first was the current party chief, Jagat Prakash Nadda.
Interestingly, the BJP constitution does not have any provision for appointing a working president. However, since 2019, this position has become a stepping stone before assuming the role of BJP chief.
Naveen follows in Nadda's footsteps
In June 2019, JP Nadda was appointed the working president of the BJP after Amit Shah became the Union Home Minister.
He held this position for about six months. Then, in January 2020, he was formally elected as the national president of the BJP. Nadda has now been serving as the party chief for almost six years.
According to the BJP constitution, a leader can serve as president for two terms of three years each.
The complete plan for the working president's appointment
According to BJP leaders, the appointment of a working president is an interim arrangement. Another reason is Kharmas, which Hindus consider inauspicious. Kharmas begins on Tuesday. This is why Naveen was appointed as the working president. After Kharmas ends on January 14, Makar Sankranti, the process for electing the new party chief can begin.
Elections completed in 30 out of 37 states
The BJP has already completed organizational elections in 30 out of 37 states and Union Territories. This is significant because it is necessary to complete organizational elections in at least half of the country's states to begin the process of electing the party chief.
According to BJP leaders, the election for the president's post will take at least four days and could be completed immediately after January 14. Although the election will be a mere formality, Naveen's position is considered secure as the BJP and its ideological parent organization, the RSS, emphasize consensus in such matters.
Thus, Naveen will assist Nadda and learn the ropes before becoming the BJP chief, just as Nadda learned from Shah six years ago. Who is Nitin Naveen?
Nitin Naveen, 45, is the Road Construction Minister in Bihar. He is also a five-time MLA from Bankipur in Patna. He first became an MLA at the age of 26, when the Patna West assembly seat fell vacant after the death of his father and BJP veteran leader Naveen Kishore Sinha.
Naveen is poised to become the first BJP chief from Bihar and Eastern India. If he becomes the party's national president next year, he will be the youngest BJP president in history, breaking the record of Nitin Gadkari, who assumed the post at the age of 52.
