New Delhi: The intensity of winter is increasing in most parts of the country. Cold waves in North and Northwest India, snowfall in hilly areas, and dense fog in the plains are affecting people's daily lives. According to the Meteorological Department, the cold weather persists due to a Western Disturbance and the activity of the subtropical westerly jet stream.

Impact of Western Disturbance and Jet Stream

The Meteorological Department stated that a Western Disturbance is currently active at high altitudes over North Pakistan and surrounding areas. Another trough is also present at the middle levels. The speed of the subtropical westerly jet stream has reached up to 120 knots, which strengthens the Western Disturbance during winter. This is why temperatures in North India remain below normal.

Fog and Cold in the Plains

Dense fog is prevailing in the plains during the morning and night, significantly reducing visibility. Fog is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on December 17th and 18th. A very dense fog alert has been issued for Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Due to weak winds, fog and cold weather are likely to persist in the coming days.

Situation in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand

Light snowfall has been recorded in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh. The minimum temperature in Lahaul-Spiti has dropped below freezing. The temperature was recorded at minus 5.7 degrees Celsius in Kukumseri and minus 2.7 degrees Celsius in Tabo. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for fog in the plains. Due to the lack of rain, the chances of a severe cold spell by the end of December are considered low.
