Maharashtra: The blame game is intensifying daily ahead of the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra. On one hand, Maharashtra government minister Ashish Shelar has accused the Thackeray brothers of engaging in appeasement politics. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray has attacked the SCR. He said that local body elections in Maharashtra should be held only after the voter list is cleaned up.

The Central Government is Afraid of Gen Z: Thackeray
At a press conference on Monday, Thackeray leveled several serious allegations against the ruling party. He alleged that the Election Commission and the Central Government are afraid of Gen Z. He claimed that those turning 18 after July 1st will be deprived of their voting rights. He said, "I am saying this because the Election Commission has set July 1 as the cut-off date for voter eligibility for the upcoming local body elections."

Allegations of appeasement politics rejected
Uddhav Thackeray also rejected the ruling BJP's allegations of appeasement politics regarding irregularities in the voter list. Thackeray said that the Election Commission should correct the irregularities in the voter list, including duplicate and fake names. Neither the Shiv Sena (UBT) nor any other opposition party has mentioned any fake voters based on religion. "We are not opposing the elections, but want them to be held only after the voter list is cleared."

Appeal to citizens
He also appealed to citizens to visit their nearest Shiv Sena (UBT) local office and verify whether their names are listed correctly and whether there are any errors or omissions. This will help us understand how many young people are deprived of the right to vote.

BJP counterattacks Thackeray brothers
Now the ruling BJP has counterattacked. BJP leader and Maharashtra government minister Ashish Shelar said that Shiv Sena (United) BJP chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray are engaging in appeasement politics and conspiring to pressure government employees for the upcoming civic elections. Elections are scheduled for municipal bodies across Maharashtra, including the BMC, by January 2026. Shelar alleged that the Thackeray brothers and Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders are committing a sin. They are hating Biharis and targeting their own Marathi voters.

"Thackeray brothers engaging in appeasement politics"
Shelar said, "They can oppose us politically, but they shouldn't stoop so low. They are questioning the alleged multiple entries of Hindu voters, but by doing so, they are sowing the seeds of Hindu-Muslim divide. Why didn't they mention the names of voters from other communities? We want an answer to this." Shelar asked, "Why are only Marathi people being accused of making fake entries in the voter list?" NCP-SP MLA Rohit Pawar alleged fake entries in the Karjat Jamkhed Assembly constituency, but the same list also contained double entries for Imran Qadir and Tabassum Abdul Mulani. Why didn't Raj Thackeray see these, and why did he only see the names of Marathi people? Ashish Selar said, "There are many entries for Muslim and other community members, but only Hindu, Dalit, and Marathi people are being talked about."

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court has directed the Maharashtra State Election Commission to conduct local body elections in the state by January 31, 2026. The Election Commission recently decided to conduct a thorough revision of voter lists in 12 states, including Maharashtra. This is being opposed by the opposition. Recently, the Maha Vikas Aghadi even launched a protest against this, accusing the Election Commission of helping the BJP.
