New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has strongly criticized senior bureaucrats in Maharashtra for what he called a serious breach of protocol during Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B.R. Gavai’s visit to the state yesterday.
He was addressing at a book launch event at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, Dhankhar expressed his gratitude to the CJI for drawing attention to the importance of upholding protocol, stating that such matters reflect respect not just for individuals but for the institutions they represent.
Referring to the incident that took place on Sunday during Justice Gavai’s first visit to Maharashtra after assuming office as Chief Justice of India, Dhankhar said, “This morning, I was reminded of something which is very critical in the country and that is not for oneself.
What the present Chief Justice said, we must believe in protocol. Chief Justice of the country and protocol is placed very high. When he indicated this, it was not personal, first for the position he holds and I am sure this will be kept in mind by one and all. I am really beholden to the present Chief Justice for inviting attention to the people in bureaucracy adherence to protocol is fundamental.”
As per Dynamite News correspondent, the controversy erupted after top Maharashtra officials — including Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla, and Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti — failed to receive the Chief Justice at the airport. The absence of these senior officials was noticed when Justice Gavai attended an event hosted by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, where he subtly addressed the issue.
“I don’t wish to make a big issue out of minor details,” said the CJI during his speech, “but respect must be mutual and universal. The three pillars of democracy — the judiciary, legislature, and executive — must respect each other and maintain institutional decorum.”
Following the Bar Council event, Justice Gavai proceeded to Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It was there that the three senior bureaucrats were finally seen in attendance.
According to sources, the officials became aware of the Chief Justice’s displeasure after his comments at the earlier event and scrambled to correct their lapse by showing up at his next stop.
Later, while speaking to journalists, CJI Gavai clarified, “I am not personally concerned about protocol, but I felt it was my responsibility to share what I experienced.”
The incident has triggered a wave of criticism across the country, raising concerns over bureaucratic sensitivity to constitutional positions. It also underscores the need for greater institutional respect and adherence to protocol in India’s democratic framework.
