Beirut: A human rights body has accused Israel of using white phosphorus munitions during military strikes in southern Lebanon, claiming the shells were deployed over residential areas.
In a report released on Monday, the international rights organisation said the Israeli military allegedly used artillery shells containing white phosphorus during attacks carried out on March 3 amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Strikes Reported in Southern Lebanese Village
According to the report, the munitions were used in the village of Yohmor, where Israeli forces were reportedly targeting positions linked to Hezbollah. Human Rights Watch said the attacks occurred over residential neighbourhoods, raising concerns about the potential risk to civilians living in the area.
The rights group described the use of white phosphorus in populated areas as unlawful under international humanitarian law due to the severe harm it can cause.
Evidence Based on Verified Images
The organisation said its findings were based on the analysis of several images that were verified and geolocated.
According to the report, at least seven images appeared to show airburst white phosphorus munitions exploding over homes in the affected area. These airburst shells release burning fragments that can ignite fires when they come into contact with buildings, vegetation or vehicles.
Fires Reported in Homes and Vehicles
Human Rights Watch said the shelling led to immediate fires in residential structures. Visual evidence cited in the report showed civil defence workers responding to blazes in at least two houses and one vehicle in the village.
Local emergency responders were seen attempting to control the fires caused by the strike.

Evacuation Orders Issued Earlier
The reported shelling occurred shortly after the Israeli military had issued evacuation warnings to residents of Yohmor and several other villages in southern Lebanon. Authorities had asked civilians to leave the area as part of ongoing military operations against Hezbollah positions.
Growing Concerns in West Asia Conflict
The allegations come as the wider conflict in West Asia continues to intensify, drawing international scrutiny over the conduct of military operations in populated areas.
Human rights organisations have repeatedly called on all sides involved in the conflict to ensure civilian protection and adhere to international humanitarian law.
